Wissam Jawad al-Tawil, a senior Hezbollah military official, was killed in an Israeli strike in southern Lebanon on Monday, according to a Lebanese security source.

He was notably responsible for directing military operations on the Israeli border, where the Islamist movement has been carrying out almost daily attacks against the IDF for three months. It was also about ten kilometers from the border that he was killed, in a drone strike on his car.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Israel would gradually end the “phase of intense maneuvers” in the Gaza Strip. According to Hamas, nearly 23,084 people have been killed since October 7. 249 of them died in the last 24 hours.

Thousands of other Gazans have fled south as fighting between Israeli forces and Hamas fighters rages in the center of the Palestinian enclave.

Earlier in the day, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Saudi Arabia to prevent the war from spreading to the region. Washington is seeking to bring Arab leaders together to secure not only a truce, but also prepare for Gaza’s future after the conflict.

The EU’s head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, also said he had discussed with the Saudi foreign minister “measures to translate the international consensus on the two-state solution into action.”
