He is believed to be responsible for the rocket attack on the Golan Heights that killed 12 children last Saturday. Hezbollah military leader Foued Shukr was found dead under the rubble of the building targeted by an Israeli strike.
The body of Hezbollah’s top commander Fued Shukr was found in the rubble of the building targeted by an Israeli strike on Tuesday. The military leader is believed to be behind the rocket attack on the Golan Heights that killed 12 children last Saturday.
Israeli attack in response to strike on Golan Heights
After the strike launched by Israel that targeted one of Hezbollah’s strongholds, the reaction of the Lebanese government was not long in coming. Lebanese officials reacted by warning that peace in the Middle East was at risk of being compromised.
Lebanese Information Minister Ziad Makari said the bombing “is an attack on goodwill initiatives, peacemaking efforts in favor of calm and understanding”.
3 dead and 74 injured
The strike in Beirut hit an apartment building in the Haret Hreik neighborhood, a busy urban area where Hezbollah conducts political and security operations but also has many small shops and apartment buildings.
Three people were killed and 74 others injured, according to the Lebanese health ministry.
Drone attack
Abbas Alaa Eddine, a resident of the neighborhood, describes the attack he witnessed: “I live in the building behind this one. Around 7:45 or 7:40 a.m., a strike came, not from a plane. It was a rocket fired from a drone. As you can see, this is an area full of residents. This is a cowardly act, a miserable and despicable act.”.
The Lebanese National News Agency confirmed that the attack was carried out by a drone that launched three rockets.
International call for calm
The United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, said: “deeply concerned” by this strike and called for “calm”.
US Vice President Kamala Harris said that Israel “has the right to defend himself against the terrorist organization”referring to Hezbollah, but added: “We still need to work on a diplomatic solution to end these attacks, and we will continue to do so.”.
The tone rises between Hezbollah and Israel
Hezbollah and Israel have exchanged near-daily strikes over the past decade, against the backdrop of the war in Gaza, but have so far kept the conflict at a low level, unlikely to escalate into all-out war.
This is the second strike in Beirut this year: in January, an Israeli air raid killed a senior Hamas official, Saleh Arouri.
This is the first time Israel has struck Beirut since the 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006.
