Insufficient electricity production in Romania and Ukraine
The red alert has been triggered in Romaniawhere temperatures reach 40°C in the shade.
Calls to emergency services are increasing, many freight trucks are immobilized and trains are running at reduced speed.
The heat wave is also putting a strain on the country’s energy system. Production is not keeping up with consumption and power outages are becoming more frequent.
Ukraine, Romania’s neighbour, is also not spared from the heatwave.
While doctors usually recommend staying cool indoors during extreme heat, this advice is difficult to apply in Ukraine, where Russian missile strikeshave destroyed much of the country’s electricity-generating capacity, limiting the use of air conditioners.
Massive fires ravage southern Europe
In North Macedonia, efforts continue to extinguishing forest fires on Serta Mountain, Negotino region.
Helicopters and firefighting planes will be deployed on Tuesday to try to contain the seven fires still burning in the country.
