US Vice President and Democratic Party candidate for the US presidential elections, Kamala Harris, said that we must work to reach a two-state solution “so that Israelis and Palestinians can enjoy security and the right to self-determination.”
Harris indicated – in an interview with CNN – that there is an opportunity to end the war, return the detainees, and provide relief to the Palestinians after the death of the head of the Hamas political bureau, Yahya Sinwar.
She also stressed that the killing of a very large number of Palestinian civilians in Gaza is “unacceptable.”
During the interview, Harris evaded answering a question regarding whether she would be more supportive of Israel than her Republican rival and former President Donald Trump.
She answered the question, “Do you think you would be more supportive of Israel than Donald Trump?”, succinctly and emotionally without mentioning her support for Israel, and focused instead on Trump’s admiration for what she described as authoritarian presidents such as North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin, and continued. He responded for about a minute without mentioning Israel.
Trump is showing off
On the other hand, Trump boasted yesterday, Wednesday, of his almost daily phone calls with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stressing that they have a “very good relationship.”
Trump said – during an election rally in the state of Georgia – “Bibi (Netanyahu’s nickname) called me yesterday, and he had called me the day before… We have a very good relationship.”
The former president pledged to work closely with the Israeli leadership if he wins the presidential elections scheduled for next November 5, saying, “We will work very closely with them.”
On October 11, Kamala Harris confirmed that there is a need for calm in the Middle East and to reach a ceasefire agreement in Lebanon and Gaza, noting that the United States is working around the clock on this matter.
Last September, she also called for an end to the war in Gaza, and said that Israel should not reoccupy the Palestinian Strip once the Israeli war on the Strip, which has been ongoing for more than a year, ends.
