The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) strongly condemned the United States’ use of its veto against a draft resolution in the Security Council demanding an immediate ceasefire for humanitarian reasons in the Gaza Strip, while its ally Israel thanked it for its continued support during the ongoing aggression against the besieged Strip.

Izzat al-Rishq, a member of Hamas’ political bureau, said in a statement on the Telegram platform, “We strongly condemn Washington’s use of its veto against a draft resolution in the Security Council demanding a ceasefire in Gaza.”

He added, “America’s obstruction of the issuance of a ceasefire resolution represents the occupation’s direct participation in killing our people and committing more massacres and ethnic cleansing,” describing Washington’s position as “immoral and inhumane.”

Yesterday, Friday, the United Nations Security Council held an emergency session to vote on the draft resolution presented by the United Arab Emirates, in which more than 80 countries, including Turkey, participated, but the Council was unable to adopt the draft resolution due to the United States’ use of its veto power.

13 of the 15 Council members supported the project, with the United Kingdom abstaining from voting.

The draft resolution called for an immediate ceasefire for humanitarian reasons, and reiterated its call on all parties to comply with their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law, especially with regard to the protection of civilians. It also called for the immediate and unconditional release of all “hostages,” and to guarantee the arrival of humanitarian aid.

Israel thanks America

In return, Israel thanked the United States for using its veto power in the UN Security Council to thwart the draft law. Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen said, in a tweet on the “X” platform, at dawn today, Saturday, “Thank you to our ally, the United States, for its continued support in the battle to return… The kidnappers and the elimination of the Hamas organization.

Cohen also continued to attack the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, and said, “Guterres’ request, siding with Hamas, and demanding a ceasefire, is a disgrace to his position, and a disgrace to the United Nations.”

In recent weeks, Israel has directed several criticisms at the Secretary-General of the United Nations, due to his demands to stop the Israeli aggression against Gaza.

As for the Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, he wrote on the Hostages and the destruction of Hamas,” he said.

Since last October 7, the Israeli army has launched a devastating aggression against the Gaza Strip, leaving 17,487 martyrs and 46,480 wounded, most of them children and women, massive infrastructure destruction, and an unprecedented humanitarian disaster, according to official Palestinian and UN sources.
