The Hajj, which is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world and one of the five pillars of Islam, begins this Friday, June 14, in Saudi Arabia. More than a million and a half pilgrims arrived in the country on Tuesday.

This is a pilgrimage that every Muslim must complete at least once in their life if they have the physical capabilities and financial means. This year it has been overshadowed by the war taking place in Gaza.

Significant economic benefits for Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is expected to generate USD 10-15 billion in economic benefits from the pilgrimage this year. With the influx of pilgrims from all over the world, businesses are making significant profits. The hotels and restaurants around the Grand Mosque are full. The stores are open 24 hours a day.

Watch store owner Bandar Ghoweiry explains:

Business is excellent. Pilgrims buy gifts from holy Mecca, one of the purest parts of the earth. They buy them to have them blessed.”

The country wants to attract more than 150 million tourists per year by 2030.
