Several months after his election as president of Guatemala, social democrat Bernardo Arévalo was officially inaugurated after campaigning on the fight against corruption. Tensions continued in Parliament until the final hours before the ceremony.
After months of uncertainty, Bernardo Arévalo was finally sworn in as Guatemala’s new president.
The inauguration of the social democrat was held on the night of Sunday to Monday at the National Theater in Guatemala, a ceremony delayed by several hours due to debates led in Parliament by right-wing deputies allied to the outgoing president.
Bernardo Arévalo was elected last August, with a comfortable margin, on his commitment to fighting corruption. Since then, the pitfalls sown by a political and economic elite considered corrupt had accumulated.
