In Greece, pornographic deepfake videos are claiming more and more victims. The people concerned are mainly minors.
A wave of deepfake pornographic videos is invading Greece. The creators of this content use free Artificial Intelligence tools available online to transform personal photos and videos into fake pornographic videos. In the majority of cases, the victims are minor students and schoolchildren.
“Artificial Intelligence has made it easier for scammers. They find AI tools very simple to use and don’t need sophisticated training. They take your photos, they take your face and place it in an erotic video. They are disrupting video on various platforms. Their aim is to take revenge, get ransom or just have fun. We have hundreds of cases where children’s faces have been used in deepfake videos and these videos are spread among classmates” explains Manolis Sfakianakis, founder of the CSI Cybersecurity Institute.
In Greece, the first incident linked to pronographic deep fakes created using artificial intelligence was recorded around three years ago. The victim was a minor student and the attacker a classmate. What emerged from the investigation shocked the authorities.
Kelly Ioannou, CEO of CyberX, says: “her classmate took photos from her social media and used them in a way to make it appear that the victim was participating in sexual activity. After the investigation was completed, we discovered that the victim was the top student in the class and the attacker was the second best student and he just wanted to discredit her.”
In Greece, cases of privacy breaches have tripled over the past decade. The government is preparing a new law to help victims deactivate and delete videos as quickly as possible.
