Greece faces its first heatwave of the year

Temperatures this Thursday are expected to reach 43 degrees in some parts of the country.

The Acropolis site closed, classes suspended in schools, doctors called in for reinforcements… Athens is taking measures to withstand the extreme temperatures this week.

The Municipality of Athens has decided to extend the opening hours of community centers, where one can find some respite in air-conditioned spaces.

The Acropolis Hill, home to one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world, has been closed to avoid discomfort among tourists.

Last July, Greece faced the longest heat wave in its history, which also caused huge fires: 175,000 hectares of forest and agricultural land burned.

The authorities fear another trying summer, with global warming increasing episodes of heat waves and drought in the country.
