Ghana Central Bank is preparing to launch a legal framework for licensing encrypted currency trading platforms, foremost of which is Bitcoin, according to the proposed timetable by September 2025.
This trend aims to organize an accelerated market growth, with estimates indicating that the annual transactions in Ghana have reached about 3 billion dollars.
Therefore, the proposed framework includes clear compliance criteria to ensure consumer protection and limit fraudulent activities, as well as support for financial innovation.
The licensing controls include a safe storage for digital assets, mechanisms to combat money laundering, and programs to educate investors, according to what the Central Bank confirmed.
Ghana in a converted African context
This step comes within a wider approach on the continent, as many African countries view decentralized technologies as possible alternatives to traditional banking services.
Ghana takes a similar approach to countries that seek to achieve a balance between organizational oversight and economic benefit from the digital currency market, especially in light of the increasing youth dependence on the “Vinca” solutions to overcome the challenges of external transfers and inflation.
