Raging rivers and rising water levels that surprise the inhabitants. Southern Germany faces historic flooding.

These floods caused the death of at least four people, including a 42-year-old volunteer firefighter on an evacuation mission near Pfaffenhofen in Bavaria. Another 22-year-old rescuer is still missing.

A few dozen kilometers further, in Regensburg, the Danube reached a record level of 5.9 meters. The authorities declared a state of emergency.

Switzerland remains on alert. The Rhine between the mouth of the Aare and Basel is still at alert level 3 out of 5, as is Lake Constance. Authorities expect waters to continue rising until midweek and could even reach danger level 4.

In northern Italy, divers, drones and helicopters continue to search for a young man swept away by flash floods, a day after two other bodies were discovered.

The 3 people found themselves stuck in the middle of the Natisone River, in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, when the river levels suddenly started to rise.
