The head of Germany’s Protestant church resigned Monday, following accusations of neglect over sexual abuse accusations.

Annette Kurschus is suspected of having been informed of sexual assaults committed in the 1990s by a pastor, a former colleague who practiced in Siegen, the same town as her, and with whose family she is friends. She would not have done anything against him.

The religious leader denies having knowledge of these alleged attacks but still decided to resign.to prevent the image of his Church from being tarnished“, she said during a press conference.

The German Protestant Church has 20 million followers.
