Germany: local elections in Thuringia, good results for the CDU, AfD third


In the state of Thuringia, the CDU comes first in the local elections. The AfD is not achieving the expected results, but remains an important force.

In total, 64 mayoral positions were to be filled.

It was the CDU which came first with 27.6% of the votes.

With 26.4%, the AfD only came in third place.

Eleven mayors from the conservative party were directly elected, and other candidates will have to go through a second round.

Note that the far-right party failed to elect a single one of these 15 candidates in the first round.

However, he could play a leading role in the local parliaments of many cities where he will have a significant blocking minority.

In addition to traditional parties, it is mainly citizen alliances and unaffiliated candidates who have gained ground.
