German Defense Secretary Boris Peporius said that Germany may consider the re -application of compulsory recruitment starting next year if a sufficient number of volunteers is not applied to join its armed forces.
Germany – a NATO member (NATO) – is looking to strengthen its military power, following the Russian attack on Ukraine in 2022, but it seems that it will not succeed in attracting enough recruits.
The German armed forces said that 100,000 additional soldiers are needed in the coming years to fulfill NATO obligations, knowing that the country canceled the service of compulsory recruitment in 2011.
“Our model depends in principle on voluntary participation, if the time comes when we have a capacity that exceeds the voluntary records, then we may decide to make it mandatory,” Pistorius said – in statements to a local newspaper.
He said that a new draft law in this regard could enter into force on January 1, 2026. The Democratic Party’s focus has always been on volunteering options to rebuild the army.
Andreas Hin, commander of the Internal Security Squad in Germany, supported recruitment campaigns. “We are on the right path, but we now need to accelerate the frequency of recruitment, in terms of equipment and expanding infrastructure, and most importantly, individuals,” Hin said in an interview.
