A table covered with red extending over several hundred meters has sculpted a path through mountice of rubble in the south of Gaza, while families gathered to break their fast during the Sacred Muslim month of Ramadan.
While the sun was sleeping in a district in Rafah, where the War of Israel against Gaza barely left a handful of standing buildings, hundreds of Palestinians of all ages dug in their Iftar meal marking the end of the day.
“People are deeply saddened, and everything around us is heartbreaking,” said Malak Fadda, who had organized the common meal.
“So, we decided to bring joy into this street, just like before the war.”
The music has traveled speakers through the crowd in Rafah, which was seated on a long row of plastic chairs under the burning, the Palestinian flags and the lights threaded between the broken concrete.
The Israeli bombardment has moved almost the entire population and sparked general hunger, according to the United Nations.
The truce which entered into force on January 19 allowed the more important aid flows in the devastated Palestinian territory, but hundreds of thousands continue to live in tents, many camped in the rubble of their old houses.
In the north of the city of Beit Lahiya, dozens gathered with a challenge in the discolorating evening light to break the fasting among the remains of the half -rolled buildings.
“We are here in the middle of destruction and rubble and we are firmly despite the pain and our injuries,” said Mohammed Abu al-Jidyan.
“Here we eat Iftar on our earth and we will not leave this place,” he added.
