Gaza: New Israeli Bombings and Third Day of Polio Vaccination


At least eight people were killed in an Israeli attack in the Jabalia refugee camp in Gaza, as the campaign to vaccinate Palestinian children against polio continues.

Israeli attack kills at least eight people at UN shelter in Jabalia refugee campin Gaza, including at least five waiting to get bread, according to local media.

The attack comes a day after Israeli army missiles destroyed a house in Deir Al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip.

Israeli shelling also caused several casualties on Al-Jalaa Street, further north in the city centre.

Third day of vaccination

During this time, Polio vaccination campaign for children continues for third consecutive day in Gaza Strip.

Health workers have set up mobile vaccination centres in hopes of preventing a massive outbreak after the first case was detected in a child a few days ago.

“To support this vaccination campaign, the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF have delivered 1.2 million doses of type 2 polio vaccine to Gaza.”explains Akihiro Saita, the health director of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

According to UNRWA, At least 87,000 children have already been vaccinated as part of the campaign, which aims to immunize at least 90 percent of children under 10 in the Gaza Strip against polio..
