The Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip announced today, Monday, the death of another infant due to the extreme cold, which brings the number of children who died as a result of the extreme cold to 8, with the continuation of the stifling siege and genocide that Israel has been committing in the Strip for about 15 months.

The Ministry said – in a statement – that a baby boy named Youssef Ahmed Anwar Klubb, who was not more than 35 days old, died as a result of the harsh climate conditions and extreme cold in the Strip.

For his part, Gaza Municipality spokesman Hosni Muhanna said that the suffering of the displaced people in the city is worsening with the intensification of cold and frost waves and heavy rainfall.

He explained that the Israeli siege applied to the Gaza and northern governorates and preventing the entry of fuel and cooking gas, since the start of the ground operation in the Strip on October 27, 2023, forced the Palestinians there to use firewood and wood, including the remnants of homes destroyed by the Israeli bombing.

Harsh conditions

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) indicated that child deaths in the Gaza Strip due to the cold and lack of shelter had risen to 7.

The agency stated – in a statement yesterday, Sunday – that cold weather and lack of shelter are causing the death of newborns in Gaza, while 7,700 newborns lack life-saving care, and indicated that at least 7 children have died due to the cold in the Strip so far.

The statement indicated that the World Health Organization condemned the Israeli army’s attacks and the removal of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza from service, and stated that it had been confirmed that Israel had carried out 50 attacks on Kamal Adwan Hospital and its surrounding areas since October 2024.

In a previous statement on Tuesday, UNRWA said, “Infants have died due to the cold in Gaza during the past days, and more may die due to the cold and lack of shelter and basic winter supplies.”

Displaced Palestinians live in tents made of cloth and nylon, amid harsh humanitarian conditions due to the scarcity of basic life necessities of water and food, as well as a severe shortage of clothes, blankets and means of heating during the winter.

They took refuge in tents after Israel destroyed their homes and forced them to leave their areas of residence and head to the areas located south of the Netzarim axis (south of the Gaza Strip), which was established by the occupation army at the beginning of its ground operation in the Gaza Strip on October 27, 2023.

According to estimates by the government media office in Gaza, the number of displaced people in the Gaza Strip reached about two million out of 2.4 million residing in the Strip.

With American support, Israel has been committing genocide in Gaza since October 7, 2023, leaving more than 154,000 Palestinian martyrs and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 11,000 missing, amid massive destruction and an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.
