The authorities announced that they had arrested a suspect, who was himself a student at the establishment. He was also reportedly injured in the attack, with self-inflicted injuries.

The incident took place Thursday morning at the Wilhelm Dörpfeld high school in Wuppertal, a city of 350,000 inhabitants located near Düsseldorf and Cologne.

According to Herbert Reul, Minister of the Interior of the North Rhine-Westphalia region, the 17-year-old assailant allegedly used a knife to attack his comrades.

Two of the victims were reportedly seriously injured, as was the alleged attacker. No information was given on a possible motive, other than that the attacker acted alone.

The school was evacuated after the attack.
