Pakistan announced today, Monday, the formation of a new security force that includes rioting duties, which raised concerns among opposition parties and human rights groups to be used to suppress politicians, at a time when supporters of the Insaf Movement of Insan Khan are preparing to demonstrate on the second anniversary of his arrest.
This step will contribute to the transformation of a paramilitary force located on the northern western borders of Pakistan with Afghanistan into a national security force that will bear the name of the federal police.
“This is a new force that will be more strict. We need this force to maintain internal security,” Chuoderi added, noting that President Asif Ali Zardari has already agreed to amendments to the law that includes changes in the paramilitary force.
A copy of the average law reported by the local Donia News channel showed that the new tasks empowered for force will include maintaining internal security, rioting and terrorism.
The announcement of the formation of the Federal Police came after the Insaf Movement party said that it will organize protests across the country as of the fifth of next August, which corresponds to the second anniversary of the arrest of its leader Imran Khan (71 years).
Parliament discussion
Commenting on the move, a spokesman for the Insaf Al -Zulfikar Bukhari Party said that Parliament should discuss these changes.
Bukhari added that the new force should not be used as a way to silence political opponents, saying that the government has previously applied such laws to a large number of the leaders of the Equity Party and its supporters.
For his part, the Secretary -General of the Human Rights Committee in Pakistan, Harith, created his concern about the changes made on the structure related to security and law enforcement in the country without any discussion in Parliament.
Since the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan in August 2023 on charges that included corruption, his supporters organized a series of protests, interspersed with clashes and arrests of dozens of protesters, and demonstrations sometimes led to paralysis in the movement in the capital, Islamabad, for several days.
Late last year, the Pakistan Supreme Court allowed the military courts to issue its rulings on the supporters of Khan.
At the beginning of this year, a Pakistani court sentenced Imran Khan to 14 years in prison, and his wife, Bushra Bibi, to 7 years in prison, after being convicted of corruption in one of the dozens of cases in which he is being tried, and the former Prime Minister considers that the accusations against him are political.
