Highly appreciated in military circles and considered a hero by many Ukrainians, Valeri Zalouzhny had made it known that he would be interested in a diplomatic post.
Volodymyr Zelensky therefore approved his candidacy on Thursday and Kyiv has already sent a request for approval to London. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba welcomed the decision, calling it “very logical step”.
Officials in Kyiv say Valery Zaluzhny’s appointment should further strengthen ties with the United Kingdom. On Thursday, President Zelensky also welcomed British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps for his third visit to Ukraine. The latter announced an additional program of approximately 150 million euros in military aid, primarily focused on obtaining over 10,000 combat and reconnaissance drones for the Ukrainian army.
The United Kingdom (along with Latvia) is one of the leaders of the “ International Drone Coalition » responsible for developing and supplying kyiv with these necessary means of warfare.
Aid to Ukraine was discussed by representatives of 28 countries, including 21 ministers, with the participation of Ukrainian foreign and defense ministers, as well as the NATO Secretary General. The video conference was organized by Paris on Thursday to display a “united front” and propose concrete proposals to strengthen support for Kyiv.
