Alberto Fujimari was sentenced to 25 years in prison for “crimes against humanity”. He was released for health reasons.
He will have only served 14 years of his prison sentence. The former Peruvian president, who suffers from hypertension and respiratory and neurological problems, was released, at age 85, after a first release order from the Constitutional Court in March 2022.
The Inter-American Court of Human Rights then ordered the Peruvian state to “refrain from executing” the order, a request then followed by former left-wing president Pedro Castillo. This time, Lima did not follow the opinion of the Inter-American Court.
Peruvian justice found Alberto Fujimori guilty of the deaths of twenty-five people, including a child, in two army massacres in what was called “the war on terrorism” from the 1990s.
