Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan has been sentenced to ten years in prison.

The former cricketer was accused of disclosing classified documents, just like his former head of diplomacy, who received the same sentence.

This announcement from his party comes ten days before the legislative and provincial elections, scheduled for February 8.

Imran Khan, who still enjoys wide popular support, was declared ineligible for a period of five years. Ousted from office by a motion of censure almost two years ago, he accuses the army, which helped him come to power in 2018, of seeking to prevent him from taking over the country.

Arrested last August, Imran Khan remains incarcerated and faces charges in several other cases.
