Former Israeli Deputy Chief of Staff Yair Golan said that National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir turned the police into a private militia.
Golan added that the extremist Minister of Security is now employing the police to attack government opponents who demonstrate daily, demanding a prisoner exchange deal with Hamas and holding early elections.
In the same context, Haaretz newspaper reported that Ben Gvir ordered the border police chief, Yitzhak Brik, on Sunday to stop the police officers who clashed with extremist Jewish worshipers on Mount Meron.
The newspaper said that this step violates the Supreme Court ruling that prevents the minister from issuing such instructions to the police.
The police chief referred the case to the Public Prosecutor amid escalating tensions between him and the minister.
It is noteworthy that Israel is witnessing daily demonstrations in response to the government’s failure to recover prisoners held by the Palestinian resistance in the Gaza Strip.
Instead of taking them back, the Israeli government killed many of its prisoners in raids on the Gaza Strip, which exacerbated street discontent with the government of Benjamin Netanyahu.
Yair Golan said that Netanyahu “only cares about his personal survival and does not care if the country is burned.”
