Two years to the day after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Ukrainian authorities inaugurated on Saturday, in the town of Vyshorod, near Kyiv, a memorial named “The Cross of Heroes” in tribute to the victims who fell in combat for the country.

The glass installation was financed by private contributions initiated by religious and public groups.

The place is symbolic: it is there that the Russian invasion forces suffered their first losses on February 24, 2022: several helicopters flying towards Kyiv airport were shot down there.

In the presence of four Western leaders (the President of the European Commission and the Prime Ministers of Belgium, Italy and Canada) President Volodymyr Zelensky took the opportunity to express his gratitude for their support.

“When the world’s leading democracies are truly determined, that determination overcomes all challenges. And we have already accomplished a lot and the world believes that Putin can lose this war,” said the Ukrainian president

For her part, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock met her Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba, in Odessa, the port city that became crucial in the conflict. Odessa is constantly the target of Russian airstrikes, the latest of which hit the city just before the German minister’s visit. On Saturday evening, more Russian drones were detected targeting southeastern regions of Ukraine.
