Firefighters are being mobilised in Albania and Croatia to put out the fires, which have been caused mainly by high temperatures in recent weeks.
After several episodes of heatwaves, Albanian firefighters are struggling to put out the fires, particularly in the south and centre of the country.
Hundreds of hectares of forest have been ravaged by the flames. But the situation is not only due to high temperatures.
Police said they have arrested at least five people in recent weeks for starting fires.
Every year, the country loses an average of 10,000 hectares of land to fires. But this year, very high temperatures and wind are making it particularly difficult to fight the flames.
The situation is also difficult, but under control, in southern Croatia.
“There are some fires reigniting due to the size of the area, but they are being dealt with immediately. Firefighting aircraft are still available to us as fires are reigniting in inaccessible areas, making these aircraft invaluable to us at this time.“, explains Marin Buble, Commander of the Trogir Fire Operational Zone.
In recent weeks, no fewer than 755 firefighters and 10 Canadair planes have been mobilized to extinguish the 122 fires across the country.
