Both candidates take a firm stance towards neighboring Russia, amid tensions at the border.
The second round of the Finnish presidential election promises to be close on Sunday. Former center-right Prime Minister Alexander Stubb and former Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto, a member of the Greens who is running as an independent, are neck and neck in the polls.
During the first round, two weeks ago, Alexander Stubb came first with 27.2% of the votes, ahead of Pekka Haavisto, 25.8% of the votes.
Voters responded to the call of the polls with nearly 75% participation.
“Some people will make their decision on Saturday, or even Sunday, the day of the election, believes Juhana Aunesluoma, professor of political history at the University of Helsinki. They therefore led a very active campaign until the end. What makes it exciting is that the gap between them has narrowed.”
Both candidates take a tough stance towards neighboring Russia, while Finland recently joined NATO.
The far-right and center parties were eliminated in the first round two weeks ago. The votes of their voters could tip the scales.
The winner will succeed outgoing President Sauli Niinistö, who is stepping down after reaching the limit of two six-year terms.
