Finland extends border closure with Russia

The border between the two countries will remain closed until February 11. To justify this extension, Helsinki puts forward security reasons.

The Nordic country accuses Moscow of deliberately letting migrants pass to the Finnish side, which Russia denies.

However, Helsinki claims that it has been facing an unusual influx of asylum seekers at the border crossings between the two countries since August.

Relations between the two neighbors have been strained for more than a year. Worried about its security since the Russian offensive in Ukraine, Finland joined NATO in April 2023.
