The law aimed at deporting migrants who arrived illegally in the United Kingdom from the Channel has just reached a new milestone in the House of Commons.
In the United Kingdom, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak finally managed to pass his bill on the expulsion of migrants to Rwanda.
The law experienced many twists and turns and strong internal divisions within the Conservatives before being adopted in the House of Commons, by 320 votes to 276.
Announced in April 2022, this project aims to discourage the influx of migrants crossing the Channel (30,000 last year after a record in 2022 at 45,000 crossings).
Highly contested, this law would not be compatible with international law, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
The law still needs to be approved by unelected members of the House of Lords, who could well amend it. And if it is adopted in time before the legislative elections, scheduled for the fall, the Labor party, given the victory in the polls, has promised to repeal it if it comes to power after 14 years in the opposition.
