Explosion of dengue cases in Rio: two days before the opening of the carnival, the city declared a state of health emergency and opened around ten health centers to relieve congestion in hospitals.

São Paulo is also recording a sharp surge in infections and the authorities are spreading insecticides to neutralize some of the mosquito larvae.

The Brazilian Ministry of Health confirms more than thirty deaths, but the toll could be much higher: 230 deaths are considered suspicious and could have been caused by dengue.
