The trial of Brazilian football star Dani Alves began this Monday in Barcelona, Spain. The footballer is accused of sexually assaulting a young woman in a nightclub in the Catalan capital on December 30, 2022.

Dani Alves, 40, ex-Barcelona player, denies any wrongdoing.

State prosecutors are seeking a nine-year prison sentence for him if convicted, while the alleged victim’s lawyers are seeking 12 years in prison.

The defendant Alves was arrested on January 20, 2023 after responding to a police summons during a visit to Spain. His requests for bail were all refused, the court considering the risk of flight even though the player had offered to hand over his passport and wear a tracking device.

Dani Alves has been ordered to set aside 150,000 euros to pay his alleged victim if he is found guilty and will have to pay damages.

The footballer is one of the most successful players, winning major titles with several elite clubs, including Barcelona, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain. He helped Brazil win two Copa America trophies and an Olympic gold medal.

His contract with Mexican club Pumas was terminated immediately after his arrest.

The trial is expected to run until Wednesday at the Barcelona courthouse.
