French President Emmanuel Macron considered that the “worst scenario” after the strikes launched by the United States on the Iranian nuclear program is Tehran’s withdrawal from the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty, at a time when Germany called on Tehran to retract the decision to suspend cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
“This scenario will represent a deviation and a collective weakening,” Macron told reporters in Brussels at the end of a summit for the 27 countries of the European Union.
He pointed out that, in an effort to “preserve the nuclear proliferation treaty”, he intends to speak in the coming days with the leaders of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, starting with US President Donald Trump, which he spoke Thursday.
Macron explained that Trump has seen the discussions that the French had with the Iranians “in recent days, including in the past few hours.”
He added, “We hope that there will be a real rapprochement in views, because the goal is not to resume nuclear spread activities” by Iran.
Call to retreat
For his part, German Foreign Minister Johan Vadivul called on the Iranian parliament to retract the decision to suspend cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, describing the move as a completely wrong sign.
The German minister added, at a press conference in Berlin with his Canadian counterpart, that the leadership in Tehran should clearly announce that it is not seeking to possess a nuclear weapon.
The German minister believes that the Europeans are in a strong situation of possible negotiations with Iran on its nuclear program.
He said in radio statements yesterday, “The Europeans can impose sanctions on Tehran using the” Snap Back “mechanism, which means the re -imposition of sanctions, which under the 2015 nuclear agreement withdrew from which US President Donald Trump withdrew in 2018, can be activated if there is” great fulfillment “by Iran.
He said: “We have a real winning paper. Washington knows this, and we will use it in a coordinated way.” Vadipol added that the goal still is to reach a negotiating solution.
He stressed that he is in contact with the United States as well as his Iranian counterpart, and the three European countries are “that speak with the Iranians” and establish contacts with them.
The United Kingdom, France and Germany signed-the so-called “E-3” countries-10 years ago, the Iranian nuclear agreement, which officially ends in October, although it is no longer actually applied.
Until October, the European countries reserved the option to re -impose the previous and stronger United Nations sanctions against Iran through the Snap Back mechanism without great resistance.
These European governments give an important influence tool, even if they are not directly present at the negotiating table with Iran regarding their nuclear program.
Iranian insistence
This comes after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araraqi stated yesterday that “one of the contentious issues during the last week meeting between Iran and the foreign ministers of the” E-3 “group in Geneva was the potential activation of the” Snap Pak “mechanism to impose sanctions on his country by the United Nations Security Council.
Araqji said yesterday that the suspension of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency has become “binding” after it was approved by the legislators and approved by a supreme constitutional and supervisory body in the country.
“The draft law approved by Parliament approved by the Constitution Maintenance Council today is obligated to us, and there is no doubt about its implementation, and from now on, our relationship and cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency will be taken as a new form.”
