Europe in the campaign – Germany: recession at the heart of the vote

Published on :

As part of our coverage of the European elections, we are devoting a series of special programs to their issues in each of the major countries or regions of the European Union. This week we start with Germany.

As a reminder, with 84 million inhabitants, Germany is the most populous country in the EU. It is also the richest of the Twenty-Seven and the leading exporting power on the continent. The median income per capita is 2,083 euros per month.

Politically, it is a coalition that governs the country: under the leadership of the social democratic chancellor Olaf Scholz, his party, the SPD, has allied with the Greens of Die Grunen and the Liberals of the FDP around a common program . But their alliance sometimes experiences tensions. On June 9, during the European elections, the Germans will elect 96 deputies to the European Parliament.

Their vote will undoubtedly be influenced by the worrying state of the German economy: the last five years have been marked by the Covid crisis and the war in Ukraine, and Germany has performed poorly with 0.3%. growth only, compared to 0.7% for its French neighbor. This economic giant even entered recession in 2023.

In this context, voters across the Rhine will have the choice between defenders of budgetary rigor, supporters of a costly ecological and social transition, and the eurosceptic and anti-migrant far right.
