Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed on Monday that his country will not allow the division of Syria, and will take the necessary measures if it feels that there is a danger threatening its disintegration.
Erdogan said in a speech he delivered after chairing a government meeting in the presidential complex in Ankara, “We cannot allow Syria to be divided under any pretext, and if we notice the slightest danger, we will quickly take the necessary measures.”
He added that Türkiye has the means to implement these measures, which he did not specify. The Turkish President also stated that the end of Kurdish militants in Syria is approaching, stressing that there is no place for terrorism, and that those who support terrorists will be buried with their weapons, as he put it.
Referring to a possible military intervention against the Kurdish units in Syria, Erdogan stated, “If the danger is identified, we can intervene suddenly, in one night… We have the ability to do that.”
Following the fall of the regime of ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on December 8, Turkey warned Kurdish militants in Syria against exploiting the situation, and reinforced its forces on the border, in parallel with a military operation carried out by the Syrian National Army – supported by Ankara – against the Kurdish units in Eastern Aleppo countryside.
Earlier today, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said that the end of Kurdish militants in Syria is imminent.
In his speech in Ankara, Erdogan also spoke about the ongoing war on Gaza, and expressed his hope that a ceasefire would be reached in the Strip soon.
The Turkish President said, “Just as faith and patience triumphed in Syria after 61 years of Baath Party oppression and 13 years of massacres, the sun of justice will dispel the darkness of oppression in Palestine as well,” adding, “The independent state of Palestine will inevitably be established on the basis of the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.” and geographically integrated.
