The French president is on a state visit to Morocco for three days starting Monday, after having provided his support to Rabat on the question of Western Sahara in July.
French President Emmanuel Macron begins a three-day state visit to Morocco this Monday, invited by King Mohammed VI as a sign of calming bilateral relations.
Discussions will notably focus on partnerships on trade, climate change and immigration.
The new French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau is part of the delegation, as are eight other members of the Barnier government.
During his visit, Emmanuel Macron is also due to meet Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, and address the Moroccan Parliament.
This visit comes a few months after the French president supported Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara, to the detriment of Algeria.
In recent years, relations have sometimes been fragile between Paris and Rabat. France, for example, reduced visas granted to Maghreb nationals and condemned the deterioration of press freedom in Morocco. Rabat, for its part, refused the aid offered by Paris following the earthquake of September 2023.
