Emmanuel Macron to accept Attal government’s resignation “by this evening”

However, Gabriel Attal and his cabinet will remain in place, particularly during the next Paris Olympic Games, while awaiting the appointment of a new head of government.

Once enacted, the resignation of the Attal cabinet will mean a real political earthquake in France, because the country will enter a period known as a “resigning government” – which means that it cannot be overthrown by a vote of no confidence.

A resigning government has limited powers. Gabriel Attal and his ministers will only be responsible for handling current affairs to ensure the continuity of the state. Thus, in principle, no political measures can be taken during this interim period by a resigning government.

While this configuration may be understandable in a transition phase, it will clearly pose a democratic problem if it continues, especially if we consider the complexity of the negotiations for the appointment of the future Prime Minister.

The left alliance, the New Popular Frontwhich won the most seats in the legislative elections, clearly shows its divisions and its inability to reach any compromise.

On Monday evening, the Socialists, Communists and Greens agreed on “a common candidate from civil society”.

This is Laurence Tubiana, diplomat and economist, one of the main players in the signing of the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015.

But her candidacy was rejected by the main party of the left-wing alliance, La France Insoumise (LFI) – some party MPs say she is too close to President Macron.
