Customs officers at the port of Algeciras, in Spain, had a keen eye: they intercepted a container coming from Suriname loaded with eight tons of high purity cocaine. Three people were arrested.
Spanish authorities announced the seizure of eight tons of cocaine hidden in a container that arrived at the port of Algeciras from Suriname, carrying a fake generator.
Spanish customs said on Monday it was the country’s largest seizure of “high purity” cocaine in recent years, adding that three people had been arrested in an investigation into the shipment. .
It was while inspecting a container coming from Suriname that customs officers discovered what it contained after scanning it.
Inside a metal structure, declared to be an electrical generator, investigators quickly spotted several thousand carefully packaged packages.
According to authorities, the structure of the alloy was intended to evade detection by scanners, the first time this method of concealment has been identified.
Despite this camouflage, the scanner returned images showing goods stacked on pallets, taking up virtually all available space.
