The Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdelatty, confirmed that Cairo “actively develops” a reconstruction plan for Gaza.
The Egyptian government draws up a Gaza reconstruction plan without moving the population of the Palestinian enclave, while trying to provide a viable alternative to the controversial proposal of US President Donald Trump to “take over” and move his population.
The Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Badr, Abdeatty, said that Cairo “actively develops a complete and multi-purses plan for the recovery and early reconstruction of Gaza,” the state newspaper al-Ahram reported on Monday.
The newspaper added that Egypt plans to finalize the plan “Next week”, while its first phase should begin “after the Arab Emergency Summit in Cairo”, currently scheduled for February 27.
Before that, Saudi Arabia will welcome officials from Egypt, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan, as part of an Arab meeting in the Capitale Riyadh to discuss the reconstruction proposed by the Riyadh Reunion, on Thursday. Cairo.
Trump has caused an international outcry since his return to the White House at the end of January, because he repeatedly suggested that the United States could “take over” and “own” Gaza, permanently reinstall its Palestinian population of more than 2 million of people and redeveloping the enclave in a holiday destination.
Trump put pressure on Egypt and Jordan to welcome residents of Gaza as part of the plan, in a robust proposal rejected by the two countries and distorted himself as “ethnic cleaning” by the defense groups of the defense of rights.
Part of the Cairo plan consists in establishing “secure areas” within Gaza where Palestinians can live while dozens of Egyptian and international construction companies eliminate and rehabilitate the infrastructure torn by the war, reports Al-Ahram .
The proposed reconstruction process will have three phases that will take up to five years, said two Egyptian officials at the Associated Press news agency (AP), speaking on condition of anonymity.
‘Refute the logic of the American president Trump’
The Al-Ahram newspaper claims that the formulation by Egypt of its own plan was designed to “refute the logic of the American president Trump”, as well as for “any other vision or plans which aims to change the geographic and demographic structure of the Gaza Strip ”.
Palestinians will be allowed to stay in Gaza during reconstruction, with three “safe areas” established in the territory to host them during an initial “early recovery period”, said officials in the AP.
Mobile houses and shelters will be erected in safe areas, while humanitarian aid will be authorized to disseminate. The reconstruction effort will also provide tens of thousands of jobs to the Gaza population, according to anonymous Egyptian officials.
Cairo has also had discussions on the means to finance their plan with European diplomats, as well as the Saudi Arabian Arabian partners, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, reports the AP, citing Arab and European diplomats.
An international conference on the reconstruction of Gaza was also launched, according to two of the sources, speaking on condition of anonymity when the proposal is still being negotiated.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday that was “committed” to Trump’s plan for “a different Gaza”. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was also in Saudi Arabia this week to push Trump’s plan.
The Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced on Monday that he would establish a special direction for the “voluntary departure” of the Palestinians of the Coastal Enclave.
The Katz office said that the coordinator of government activities of Israel in the territories (COGAT) had presented an initial proposal which would see “any resident of Gaza who wishes to emigrate in a third state” would receive “in -depth assistance” to do .
Netanyahu has promised that “neither Hamas nor the Palestinian authority” will govern Gaza at the end of the War of Israel over 15 months against the enclave, which saw more than 48,000 Palestinians killed and triggered a humanitarian crisis in the enclave.
Hamas said he was willing to abandon power, a spokesperson saying on Sunday at the AP that the group would accept the formulation of a Palestinian unity government without its participation or a committee of technocrats to manage the enclave.
