Egypt denied on Saturday that it had backed away from interfering in South Africa’s lawsuit accusing Israel before the International Court of Justice of committing war crimes in the Gaza Strip.
The Cairo News Channel quoted an unnamed high-ranking source as saying that there is no truth to what was published by Israeli media regarding Egypt’s retreat from joining South Africa in its lawsuit filed against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
The source confirmed that Egypt is determined to take the necessary measures to condemn Israeli practices before the International Court of Justice, without giving more details about the nature of the procedures or the time of their initiation.
Last Sunday, Egypt announced its intention to formally intervene to support the lawsuit filed by South Africa against Israel before the International Court of Justice to look into Israel’s violations of its obligations under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip.

Previous pleading
Egypt previously pleaded before the International Court of Justice last February regarding Israel’s practices in Palestine, as part of hearings regarding an advisory opinion requested by the United Nations General Assembly regarding the legal consequences arising from Israel’s policies and practices in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Since October 7, the Israeli occupation army has been waging a devastating war on Gaza that has left more than 114,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, in addition to thousands missing under the rubble, according to the Palestinian authorities.
On January 26, the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to take measures to prevent genocide against Palestinians and improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
