Dozens of dead and missing people following floods in northwest China Environment and climate

Chinese official sources reported today, Friday, the death of 10 people and the loss of 33 others as a result of floods in Gansu Province in the northwest of the country, while Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered that “comprehensive” rescue efforts.

The official Chinese Broadcasting and Television Corporation reported that heavy rains began at 6:00 pm Thursday, which caused sudden floods in Yuchung, Gansu Province, killing 10 people while 33 missing, and the ways were cut by about 4 thousand people.

The storms in northern China caused the equivalent of average of about a year of rain on the industrial city of Bouding on the outskirts of the capital, Beijing, and this forced more than 19,000 people to displace their homes, while the authorities warned of floods in Beijing.

The heavy rains and floods that fell in northern China, including Beijing, the capital since late July, have killed at least 60 people.

On the other hand, the Chinese Central Television Station quoted Chinese President Xi as saying, “The maximum priority must be made every effort to search for and rescue missing persons, transfer and resettle persons exposed to threats, reduce losses, and restore contacts and transport as soon as possible.

Bing Jinping warned local governments against surrendering “negligence and neglect” in light of the recent events of extremist weather, according to China Central TV.

Standard heavy rains in recent weeks, while meteorologists described it as extremist climate events related to climate change.

On the other hand, the National Committee for Development and Reform said today, Friday, that it had allocated 100 million yuan (13.92 million dollars) to support the rescue efforts in Gansu after the disaster. Since last April, China has announced the allocation of at least 6 billion yuan (about $ 835 million) to finance disaster relief operations since last April.
