A new Chinese study showed that knee supports, aquatic therapy, and exercise are the most effective way to treat knee pain and their stiffness associated with degenerative arthritis, a common condition in which the cartilage in the knee deteriorates over time.

The study was conducted by researchers from the Rehabilitation Department of the First People’s Hospital in Negiang, China, and its results were published in Plos One on June 18, and the Washington Post newspaper wrote about it.

The researchers ranked the relative effectiveness of dozens of treatments, starting with laser and ultrasound to the inner internal slippers, whose effectiveness was studied in 139 experiments.

The researchers concluded the results of approximately 10,000 patients that a simple knee support ranked first in terms of effectiveness in relieving symptoms of arthritis, while aqueous therapy and exercises such as weightlifting and yoga are second and third in classification, and water therapy, also known as water exercises or aqueous treatment, is a treatment approach designed to improve symptoms.

Experts emphasized that staying active and maintaining a healthy weight are the most effective ways to relieve the symptoms of degenerative arthritis in the knee.

What is the cause of degenerative arthritis in the knee?

“When the cartilage decomposes in the knee, the joints remain in the case of bone friction with the bone,” said Prakash Japalan, director of the structural musculoskeletal research at the Shirley Ryan Rehabilitation Laboratory in Chicago.

He added that the cartilage cannot fix itself, like the rest of the body’s tissues, and often people do not realize that they lost the cartilage in their knees except after they have been completely eroded.

“There are two common factors for the risk of knee arthritis, a previous knee injury, such as a cruciate ligament rupture and unhealthy weight gain,” said Steve Messieh, Director of the JP Snow Laboratory for Biocyan Mechanics at Wake Forest University in the United States.

Messe added that every pounds (0.45 kg) of body weight constitutes a pressure on the knees by four pounds (1.8 kg) when walking.

He said that once a person has knee arthritis, he needs to make extensive changes in his lifestyle by regularly to control pain.

“It does not matter the type of exercise that you do, it is important to be active, all of which will reduce the pain,” Messi explained.

Other doctors agree that physical activity is one of the best ways to relieve knee arthritis pain, and it is the first recommendation in the 2019 instructions by the International Textile Inflammation Research Association.

People usually take non -steroidal anti -inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen to relieve symptoms. But these analgesics can harm the intestine’s lining on the long term, and knee replacement is the gold standard of damaged joints, but some people may completely recover from surgery up to a year.
