After months of rejecting a ceasefire in Israel’s war against Gaza, the Biden administration wants to see an end to the fighting.

How “permanent” is the US-Israeli plan for a “permanent ceasefire” in Gaza? The intentional vagueness of the proposal to establish a “sustained period of calm” in the Gaza Strip is the biggest obstacle to an agreement, says Michael Hanna of the International Crisis Group.

Hanna tells host Steve Clemons that governments mediating between Israel and Hamas have given the latter “private assurances” that are not mentioned in writing.

This, coupled with bellicose public statements by Israeli leaders and the epic level of distrust between all sides, is ruining the chances of ending the catastrophic war in Gaza, Hanna says.
