The largest fireworks display ever organized for a royal succession lit up Tivoli Park in Copenhagen on Sunday January 14.

Denmark’s new king, Frederik X, has officially succeeded his mother, Queen Margrethe II, who reigned for exactly 52 years over the country. She announced her abdication on December 31.

The ceremony was very simple since there is no coronation ceremony in Denmark, but only a “proclamation of succession” spoken from the balcony of Christiansborg, the seat of the Danish Parliament and government.

Frederik X and his wife, the new Queen Mary, were greeted by tens of thousands of Danes gathered for the occasion.

The royal couple’s four children also made an appearance on the balcony. The eldest, Christian, becomes the next successor to the throne, at 18 years old.
