Giulio Regeni was kidnapped by unknown persons on January 25, 2016. His mutilated body was found a few days later, in the suburbs of Cairo.
In 2021, a first trial was suspended as soon as it opened, Egypt having refused to provide the contact details of the culprits to Italian justice.
This affair complicated relations between Cairo and Rome. Italy has repeatedly accused the Egyptian authorities of not cooperating.
