Eight years after the murder of an Italian student in Cairo, a new trial has opened in Rome. The four accused are tried in absentia.

Eight years after his death, a new trial opened in Rome, without the guilty parties. Four men, members of the Egyptian security services, are accused of torturing the young man to death in January 2016.

The doctoral student at Cambridge University was carrying out research in Cairo on trade unions. A delicate subject in the Egypt of President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi. Giulio Regeni was kidnapped by unknown persons on January 25, 2016. His mutilated body was found a few days later, in the suburbs of Cairo.

In 2021, a first trial was suspended as soon as it opened, Egypt having refused to provide the contact details of the culprits to Italian justice.

This affair complicated relations between Cairo and Rome. Italy has repeatedly accused the Egyptian authorities of not cooperating.
