Death of Alexeï Navalny: his family demands that his body be returned to him


Since his death in prison on February 16, the family of Russian political opponent Alexei Navalny has been waiting for his body to be returned. His mother, Lyudmila Navalnaïa, directly challenged Vladimir Putin.

In a video message recorded in front of the Polar Circle prison where her son died, Lyudmila Navalnaïa asks the Russian President that his body be handed over to him, so that he can “bury him with dignity“.

Russian prison authorities announced the death by Alexeï Navalny on February 16. His death was due to illness, according to information provided by the prison where he had been transferred recently.

The family of the political opponent of Vladimir Putin has continued to criticize the conditions of detention of Alexeï Navalny since his conviction to nineteen years in prison in 2021 for “extremism”, after a closed-door trial.

Yulia Navalnaya, vowed to continue her late husband’s fight. Without explanation, X (formerly Twitter) temporarily suspended the widow’s account on Tuesday.

Alexeï Navalny’s brother, Oleg, is now subject to an arrest warrant, issued Tuesday by Russia without further details. Oleg Navalny, a pro-democracy activist like his brother, has been in exile since 2021.
