The day after the bloodbath caused by an Israeli raid in Rafah which reportedly left 45 dead, according to the authorities controlled by Hamas, the Israeli Prime Minister recognizes a “tragic error”.
In a speech to the Israeli Parliament on Monday, the prime minister said an investigation had been opened into the deadly IDF strike the previous night.
“For us it’s a tragedy, for Hamas it’s strategy”underlined Benjamin Netanuayou, according to comments reported by Times of Israel.
According to local Hamas-controlled health officials, the airstrike killed at least 45 Palestinians, including displaced people living in tents that were engulfed by a deluge of fire in Rafah in southern Gaza.
Gaza’s health ministry said about half of the dead were women, children and the elderly. On Monday, barefoot children sifted through the blackened debris as the search continued.
This new offensive has given rise to strong international disapproval, with some of Israel’s closest allies, particularly the United States, expressing outrage at the deaths of civilians.
On the X network, the French president once again called for an end to the fighting. “These operations must stop. There is no safe area in Rafah for Palestinian civilians. I call for full respect for international law and an immediate ceasefire.”posted President Emmanuel Macron.
Israel insists it adheres to international law even as it faces scrutiny by the U.N. justice system. Last week the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to stop its Rafah offensive.
To justify this new bloodbath, the Israeli government justified its military intervention by declaring that Hamas fighters were hiding in the bombed area. Two senior officials were reportedly killed.
