The Netherlands has fined Uber €290 million for transferring its European drivers’ data to the United States without sufficient protection.
290 million euros : this is the colossal amount of the fine imposed on Uber by the Dutch judicial authorities.
The global ride-hailing giant did not take sufficient protection when it transferred the data of its European drivers to its American headquarters.
170 French drivers had filed a complaint.
In France, the National Commission for Information Technology and Civil Liberties conducted the investigation in conjunction with its counterpart in the Netherlands.
The Dutch monitoring body refers to “a serious breach of the General Data Protection Regulation.”
Aleid Wolfsen, Chairman of the Dutch Data Protection Authority: “The US secret services can access data without proper judicial protection. This is not the case in Europe or the Netherlands, and that is what makes this case a violation. That is why it is essential that this data remains in the EU.”
