On July 23, the Senegalese capital, Dakar, witnessed the signing of a set of agreements between Senegal and Vietnam, to document bilateral cooperation in the fields of agriculture, trade and diplomacy, in the presence of the President of the Vietnamese National Assembly, Tani Mann, and the Senegalese Prime Minister Othman Sonko.

These agreements came within the framework of an official visit to a high -level Vietnamese delegation, which included more than 100 officials, and was received by Senegalese President Pasero Dewmay Fei, who described the visit as “historic”, stressing his country’s commitment to expanding strategic partnerships with the countries of Asia.

Signing notes of understanding

The visit included the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Senegalese National Assembly and its Vietnamese counterpart, aiming to enhance parliamentary cooperation and support dialogue between the two legislative institutions.

The Speaker of the Senegalese Parliament, Hajj Malik Nadai, stressed the importance of “parliamentary diplomacy” as a complement to official diplomacy.

Among the most prominent files discussed by the two parties is the cooperation in the agricultural sector, especially the rice trade, as Senegal seeks to achieve food self -sufficiency by 2035, while Vietnam is one of the major rice exporters globally.

The agreements included the transfer of agricultural technology, the training of Senegalese cadres, in addition to the development of local value chains.

These agreements represent an extension of a previous meeting of the major gathering of the two countries’ ministers during the Davos Summer Forum in the Chinese city of Tianjin, where they discussed the opportunities for development cooperation in the African continent.

These moves indicate a growing trend among many African countries towards building strategic partnerships with Asian countries, in vital sectors, most notably agriculture and food industries.
