Police in Cyprus announced – today, Saturday – a man’s arrest on suspicion of his involvement with activities related to spying and terrorism, in a rare incident on the eastern Mediterranean island, which is witnessing an increasing alert in light of the war and the escalation of regional tension between Israel and Iran.
The police said in a brief statement that the suspect was arrested “in the wake of a coordinated operation”, and he was submitted to the Limassol City Court, which decided to detention for 8 days pending the investigation, noting that the case relates to “national security”, without disclosing more details.
According to local media reports, the arrested man is a man of Azerbaijani origin with British citizenship, and he was monitored in the Zakaki suburb near Limassol while he was acting in a strange way near the “Akroteri” air force of the British Royal Air Force, as well as the “Andreas Babandrio” air base in the west of Pavos.
And the Cypriot website “Villanews” reported that the man arrived in the island last April, claiming to be a British tourist, and is believed to be linked to “Iranian agents.”
The site indicated that his arrest came based on intelligence information provided by a foreign party. During the inspection of the apartment inhabited by the suspect, the police found surveillance equipment that includes high -resolution cameras, close -up lenses, computers and 3 mobile phones, in addition to written notes.
For his part, a British Foreign Ministry spokesman confirmed that the suspect holds British citizenship, adding: “We are in contact with the authorities in Cyprus on detention.”
Local media reported that two other people were arrested in Britain believed to be related to the case, while no official comment from London was issued on this.
