Croatian forest fires: firefighters avoid worst near Split

Croatian firefighters in a town near Split say they have prevented a major fire from spreading and engulfing homes.

A fire chief said the situation in Žrnovnica had stabilised and thatNone of the 250 firefighters were injured.

Two Canadair water bombers helped extinguish the fire raging nearby in the mountainous area of ​​Gornja Podstrana, he added.

The fire broke out after a thunderstorm on Monday and accelerated on Tuesday due to high winds.

Many Balkan countries have had to deal with major fires over the summer, including Bulgaria, Greece and North Macedonia.

Experts warn that the Mediterranean will continue to suffer the consequences of the climate crisis, with the region facing high temperatures and drought.
