On Sunday, violent confrontations took place between the Israeli police and hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jews who tried to reach the Jabal Jarmaq (Mount Meron) area in the Upper Galilee region in the north of the country to celebrate a religious holiday.
The police had previously closed the Al-Jabal area, after the army canceled celebrations there this year for the Torch Festival due to the security situation on the border with Lebanon.
The Jews say that on this day they celebrate the anniversary of the revolt of the “Jewish people,” led by Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, against the Romans in the year 132 AD.

On Sunday, Israeli Army Radio broadcast a video clip showing hundreds of Haredim barricading themselves at the grave of Rabbi Bar Yochai, which is believed to be at the foot of Mount Jarmaq, while the police forcefully evacuated them.
The Hebrew newspaper “Makor Rishon” said that since Saturday evening, the police have been engaged in confrontations with hundreds of Haredim who tried to force their way into the mountain area.
Hebrew media broadcast video clips showing the Haredim throwing stones at the police, with chants of “You Nazis!” after they were prevented from entering the place.
Every year, tens of thousands of Haredim go to the Mount Meron area near the city of Safed, to celebrate the religious occasion, which this year falls on Saturday and Sunday, during which fires are lit, prayers and dancing take place.
